Photovoltaics + Diesel Generators
Sometimes the combination results in a lower cost and higher reliability system than using either power source on its own. It does depend on the load and on the location. For very small loads, photovoltaics on its own is better, as the smallest diesel generator is about 3-4kW.
The main limitation on diesel generator use is the number of hours it can operate between oil changes and other maintenance. Often this is only around 500 hours (but can be extended by special engine design).
For year-round use in higher latitudes, the generator can contribute during the winter months only, which allows the use of a smaller photovoltaic system without the generator exceeding its permitted hours in a year. This prolongs the generator’s lifetime and, what is really important, it reduces the maintenance costs when there is no need to transport fuel and service to a remote site.
In large photovoltaic systems, which require a high autonomy period, a diesel generator can reduce the size of the battery required. The generator runs only in emergencies, except for a few 'exercise runs' per year.
