Solar Module Certification

The international design standard for crystalline silicon modules is IEC61215. It is based on the old 'Ispra' test specification CEC503. Passing IEC61215 tests in an independent test laboratory is the normal assurance that a solar module design is suitable for normal use, and should have a service life of at least 30 years if installed properly.

To conform to this standard, a batch of test modules must pass such artificial environmental tests as UV radiation exposure, extremes of temperature, prolonged high temperature and humidity, mechanical loading and twisting and resistance to hail stone impacts. In addition there are electrical performance, insulation and 'hot spot' tests.

Conforming to IEC61215 only guarantees that a test batch of modules has passed the required tests. It is not a guarantee of a manufacturer's quality control in production. Some lower power and low volume production modules are not submitted for IEC61215 testing. This should not be taken as an indication that they would not pass such tests, which may be prohibitively expensive for low volume products.

Special design modules for e.g. incorporating into a special building design cannot be expected to be tested to IEC61215 for each module size, but it is reasonable to expect that a generic design using the same materials has passed such tests.
