Water Pumping

Solar powered water pumps are used to pump water from wells, boreholes, rivers, lakes in remote areas. The water is used as drinking water for villagers, as drinking water for animals, or for irrigation.

More than 10,000 solar electrified water pumps are known to be operating successfully throughout the world. Solar powered water pumps are more reliable than diesel pumps in very remote areas. There is no battery in these systems: when the sun shines, water is pumped into a tank. Since villages need a steady supply of water, provision has to be made for water storage. In contrast, crops have variable water requirements during the year, which can often be met by supplying water directly without the need for a storage tank.

The maximum solar electricity output in most water pump systems ranges from a few hundred Watts to about 2kW. Solar pumps requiring more power than that are not often economically viable, but in this power range they can be very competitive for remote areas. To read a water pumping case study click here.
